Human Use Ratings Key

I. Mining and minerals uses (MINE)

1 = road does not access a quarry or a site of known mineral potential, or accesses a dormant site
3 = road accesses a quarry that will likely have production in the near future
5 = road accesses a designated mineral material site, or a quarry that is being used

II. Recreational uses (REC)

1 = road does not access a dispersed recreation site, or is currently blocked off or vegetated preventing public use
3 = road accesses a dispersed recreation site, or is known to be a road used by hunters, gatherers, or sight-seers
5 = road serves as the only access to one or more developed or dispersed recreation site or forest-maintained trail

III. Research and monitoring uses (RES)

1 = short spur (< .5 mile) with no known research use
2 = medium length road (.5 - 1.0 mile) with no known research use, or short spur (< .5 mile) with intermittent research use
3 = long road (>1.0 mile) with no known research use, or medium length road (< .5 - 1.0 mile) with intermittent research use
4 = long road (>1.0 mile) that accesses known research site
5 = road of any length that accesses regularly used research site or requires heavy equipment

IV. Silvicultural uses (SILV)

1 = road does not access stand with planned PCT
2 = road accesses a stand < 10 acres in size with planned PCT and road is < .5 mile long
3 = road accesses a stand < 10 acres in size with planned PCT and road is > .5 mile long
4 = road accesses a stand > 10 acres in size with planned PCT and road is < .3 mile long
5 = road accesses a stand > 10 acres in size with planned PCT and road is > .3 mile long, or accesses an evaluation plantation

V. Private uses (PRIV)

1 = road does not or will not contribute in any way to access to private land, special use sites or mining claims
3 = road serves as one of multiple accesses to private land, special use sites or mining claims and is not a primary access
5 = road serves as the only access to private land, special use sites or mining claims

VI. Fire management uses (FIRE)

1 = little to no influence on attack times and no preattack facilities accessed on road segment
5 = critical influence on attack times and/or one or more preattack facilities accessed by road segment

VII. Cultural uses (CULT)

1 = road does not access a culturally sensitive site, or accesses a site that tribes wish to remain inaccessible
3 = road accesses a culturally sensitive site where the Forest Service and/or tribes plan a project within the next five years and requires vehicle access
5 = road accesses traditional gathering grounds for tribes, which they continue to use

VIII. Timber - regeneration harvests (REGEN)

1 = no regeneration harvest planned along this road
2 = road accesses block scheduled for regeneration harvest > 40 years from now
4 = road accesses block scheduled for regeneration harvest 20-40 years from now
5 = road accesses block scheduled for regeneration harvest in the next 20 years

VIII. Timber - commercial thinnings (COMTHN)

1 = no commercial thinning planned along this road
2 = road accesses stand in HJA with potential for commercial thinning 20-40 years from now
3 = road accesses stand in HJA with potential for commercial thinning in the next 20 years
4 = road accesses stand scheduled for commercial thinning 20-40 years from now
5 = road accesses stand scheduled for commercial thinning in the next 20 years

IX. Human use summary (HUMSUM)

HUMSUM = MINE*2+REC*4+RES*2+SILV*2+PRIV*8+FIRE*2+CULT*2+       REGEN+COMTHN

X. Maintenance level (ML)

if HUMSUM = 24, then ML = 0
if HUMSUM = 25-100, then ML = 1
if HUMSUM = >100, then ML = 2

if MINE, or REC, or RES, or SILV, or PRIV, or FIRE, or CULT, or REGEN, or COMTHN = 5, then ML = 2

if RES = 4, then ML = 2
